UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team were overtaken by Governors State University 80-41 Wednesday evening. The V-Hawks fall to 10-9 (CCAC 3-8) while the Jaguars rise to 15-4 (CCAC 9-2).
The V-Hawks opening six came from a series of free throws, until Marley Hughes made the three from Emily McCurdy with only 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Aubrey Dorn took a jumper to open the second holding the Jaguars to 23 points for three minutes. Back to back threes from Carly Drew and McCurdy came from work down low by Kira John to bring the V-Hawks deficit within 10 before the half ran out.
Out of the half, the V-Hawks needing to make a comeback, losing control of the game on an eight-point run by GSU, though Nora Tucker brought the rein to an end drawing the foul and making both free throws. Pearla Teko-Folly on her own rebound late in the third would score before dishing out an assist and making the layup off a play by McCurdy.
Viterbo, down heading into the fourth quarter find a series of assists from freshman Shayna Williamson to back up the remaining six V-Hawks points of the game.
McCurdy led the V-Hawks from the floor with 8 points. Zareia McDaniel led the Jaguars with 22.
The V-Hawks were outshot from the floor 45/9% to 20.4% and committed more turnovers 16-12
The V-Hawks return to action Saturday January 25 at home for a conference rematch against Calumet.
