V-Hawks Season End in NSAA Semifinals

MAYVILLE, ND. – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball 2023-24 season came to an end on Sunday afternoon as the V-Hawks lost 94-62 at Mayville State University (ND) in the semifinals of the NSAA Women's Basketball Postseason Tournament. The V-Hawks finish the season 12-13, while the Comets improve to 23-3 and will host Dakota State in the NSAA Championship Game.

Nicole Johnson scored early, but the Comets jumped out to a 12-2 lead. An Emma Wagner steal led to an Emily McCurdy jumper, but MSU used three straight threes to extend their lead. Nora Tucker hit a three of her own, and a Pearla Teko-Folly jumper ended the period with VU behind, 25-10.

Madison Hugdahl started the second quarter with a three, and Macy Stellner hit a jumper as well. Marley Hughes then found Wagner for a three, but the Comets continue to pull away with a three to go up 20 after a Hughes jump shot. Hugdahl and Hughes scored to end the half, Viterbo trailing 47-25.

Hughes set up McCurdy to start the third, then stole the ball leading to another McCurdy basket. After Hughes interrupted a Comet run, Nora Tucker nailed two from deep and McCurdy scored for an 8-0 run. However, Mayville responded with their own 9-0 run. McCurdy converted an and-one to end the quarter, but Viterbo was still behind, 71-46.

Stellner had the first three V-Hawk points in the final quarter, followed by five from Hughes, and then four straight for McCurdy. Lauryn Goettl ended the game with a pair of jumpers, but the V-Hawks lost, 94-62.

McCurdy led the V-Hawks with 15 points, and Hughes added 10 with five assists. Wagner grabbed eight rebounds. Jordan Zrust scored 27 for the Comets.

The Comets outshot the V-Hawks form the floor, 47.5% - 41.7%, and from three, hitting 16 threes on 54.7%. MSU also grabbed more rebounds, 39-33, and committed less turnovers, 11-16.

On the year, Wagner recorded 64 threes made, the 10th highest total in Viterbo history, and also moved into 10th on the career total list at 132. McCurdy set a new school record with a season free throw percentage of 85.9% (61-71).
