V-Hawks Fall to Bees and Flames

DAVENPORT, Iowa – The Viterbo University Softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday afternoon, losing to the College of Saint Mary (Neb.), 9-2, and St. Ambrose (Iowa), 4-0. The V-Hawks fall to 1-3 on the year.

CSM started the first game hot, with three runs in the top of the first. Megan Jardine answered with an RBI single in the bottom, bringing home Alina Garstka. The Flames added two more in the second, and one in the fourth. Makayla Nortman recorded a double in the fifth, then stole third, but was stranded on base. Saint Mary had a big sixth innings, scoring three runs on five hits, though Viterbo scored as well on a Marissa Carter-Olson sacrifice fly. The V-Hawks had two hits in the final inning, but were unable to score.

Morgan James led the V-Hawks with hits on all three of her at-bats, and four others recorded a hit. Ella Watts had three of the Flames 13 hits. Emily Roberts recorded the loss, while Alexis Watson and Amanda Bogdonovich each had two strikeouts. Daisy Lowther earned the win.

The game against St. Ambrose was a defensive battle, with only two hits between the teams over the first three innings, with Viterbo's coming from Nortman. The Bees scored in the bottom of the fourth, and added three more in the fifth. James reached based in the seventh, but a double play ended the game.

Nortman had the lone hit for Viterbo and six different Bees had a hit. Morgan Fuhrer had three strikeouts in the loss, while Leah Maro earned the win.

Viterbo returns to action on Saturday, February 17 at Clarke University (Iowa).
