Flames wrap up opening weekend with another win, another loss

DAVENPORT, Iowa – One win and one loss.

The College of Saint Mary softball team had a day Sunday that looked similar to its Saturday. The Flames, playing at the St. Ambrose University Dome, lost their first contest, but bounced back to win their second game.

CSM lost 4-0 to Cornerstone University in the morning game and then knocked off Viterbo University 9-2 in the afternoon.

"We saw some really good things and also saw plenty of things we need to work on," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "And that's probably what most coaches would expect after opening weekend."

The first game moved quickly through the first four innings as neither team scored. But Cornerstone took advantage of a couple hits, timely bunts and miscues from the Flames to score four runs and secure the win.

Cornerstone outhit CSM 8-5 in the contest. Paige Stuck led the Flames with two hits, while Daisy Lowther, Macy Santoni and Kayla Reed all had one each.

Megan Garcia suffered the loss. She pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up four hits and walked one. Shaylynn Campbell came on in relief and allowed four hits, one walk and one strikeout.

"We made a couple really nice defensive plays in that game that might not be noticed in the box score but were the result of players being heads up and not letting Cornerstone take extra bases on us," Bray said. "It's fun to see those things that we are working on in practice be executed in games."

Much like Saturday, the Flames bounced back to get a big win over Viterbo in the second game.

CSM was strong offensively as the Flames jumped ahead early with three runs in the first inning and went on to outhit the V-Hawks 13-7.

Ella Watts – a freshman hitting in the leadoff spot – led the way for College of Saint Mary with two doubles and a triple in her 3-for-4 showing. Garcia, Stuck and Reed all added two hits each, while Savannah Schewe, Lowther, Sydney Griffin and Claire Koile all had one a piece. Schewe's was a double.

"We looked good at the plate," Bray said. "It was nice to get more offensive production up and down the lineup this game. To get seven hits from the top three hitters in the lineup is huge, but to have pinch hitters also come in and come up clutch was great to see. We had some key sacrifice flies and also made some adjustments on hitting different pitches during the game."

Lowther got the win for the Flames. She pitched five innings, gave up four hits, walked two and fanned three. Campbell tossed the final two frames, allowing three hits and walking one.

"Daisy and Megan both had excellent starts for us today and I was proud of the leadership they both showed out on the mound," Bray said. "Shay really battled too. She missed the last two weeks of practice because of an injury and it was good to get her out there and get some live action in. I'm excited about our pitching staff moving forward."

The Flames (2-2) return to action Feb. 23-24 at Dordt University for four more indoor contests.

"We've been going hard for the last month getting ready for this weekend," Bray said. "We'll take a couple days off now and then get back to work on the things we saw that need improvement."
