V-Hawks Split with Waldorf in Conference Doubleheader

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Softball team battled the Waldorf University Warriors in a conference doubleheader at home on Wednesday. The V-Hawks defeated the Warriors in game one 4-1 but fell in game two 5-9. Viterbo moves to 6-17 overall (2-8 NSAA) while Waldorf finishes 7-13 overall (3-3 NSAA).

The V-Hawks started out hot in the first inning of game one with a sacrifice RBI by Morgan James. Sydney Haakenson found home plate on a passed ball by the Warriors heading into inning two 2-0. Viterbo kept the Warriors off the board while adding another point in the third inning with another RBI by James. McKenna Mentink would record an RBI to put Waldorf's first and only point on the board in the fourth inning. Both teams would go scoreless in the fifth inning heading into the sixth 3-1. Viterbo retired Waldorf's first three batters before a single to right field by Brittany Slocum brought teammate Addie Schroeder home, pinch runner for Marissa Carter-Olson. The V-Hawks would take home the win 4-1.

Viterbo's Maddie Wilkey recorded the win on the mound pitching all 7 innings striking out 4 total batters. James added 2 RBIs while Haakenson went 2 for 3 at the plate. McKenna Mentink recorded the loss pitching 6 innings with a total of 2 strikeouts.

Game two started off with a homerun by Waldorf's Brooke Hickey putting up two points on the board in the top of the first. Viterbo answered back scoring three runs with RBIs by Haakenson, James, and Amanda Bogdonovich. The teams went scoreless in inning two going into the third inning 3-2. Bogdonovich added a run for the V-Hawks in the third to stretch their lead, 4-2. It wasn't long before the Warriors would reclaim their lead, scoring three runs in the sixth inning with RBIs by Hickey and Kassidy Elyea. Waldorf dominated again in the seventh inning adding four more runs. The V-Hawks would retire their first three hitters at the bottom of the seventh to end the game, 5-9.

V-Hawk pitcher Ella Driebel recorded the loss playing a total of 3 innings and striking out 0 batters. Bogdonovich went 2 for 3 at the plate. Waldorf's Alex Mathers recorded the win pitching all 7 innings striking out 1 batter.

The V-Hawks return to action on Friday, April 7th in a conference doubleheader vs. Valley City State University at 2:00 and 4:00 PM CST.
