Waldorf Softball Split Against Viterbo
LACROSSE, WI – The Waldorf softball team traveled for a conference doubleheader against Viterbo. The Warriors finished with a split, losing the first game 1-4 and winning the second 9-5.
The V-Hawks scored two runs in the 1st inning and extended their lead in the 3rd with another run.
McKenna Mentink (SR/Mason City, IA) got an RBI single in the 4th inning allowing Annah Sheffield (JR/Sheffield, AL) to score the only run for the Warriors.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, the V-Hawks scored their final run to win the first game 1-4.
Mentink pitched all six innings and finished with two strikeouts and one walk.
For the second game, Brooke Hickey (SO/Adel, IA) opened the inning with a two-run homerun.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, the V-Hawks scored three runs and added a run in each of the 3rd and 4th innings to be up 2-5.
The Warriors had a big 6th inning by tying the game 5-5. Hickey had an RBI single with Emily Muro (SR/Stanton, CA) scoring. Paige Pierson (SO/Cambridge, IA) scored on a walk from Kassidy Elyea (JR/Sioux Falls, SD). Kaela Eslinger (JR/Macksburg, IA) scored on a throwing error to tie the game.
In the top of the 7th inning, the Warriors secured the win. Pierson started with an RBI single for Kyleigh Morris (JR/Papillion, NE) scoring the go-ahead run. Hickey then had a sacrifice fly out RBI with Muro getting to home plate. Eslinger and Elyea had back-to-back RBI singles with Alyssa Banda and Pierson scoring the final runs.
The Warriors won 9-5. Alex Mathers (SR/Greene, IA) pitched all seven innings with one strikeouts and zero walks. Pierson saw four at-bats with four hits, three runs, and one RBI and Hickey went 2-3 with four RBIs and one run.
Next up for the softball team is another away doubleheader against Iowa Wesleyan tomorrow, Thursday March 6thstarting at 2 p.m.
