Men's Volleyball sweeps Roosevelt before falling short to Olivet over the weekend

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Viterbo Men's Volleyball team (11-7) traveled to Illinois this weekend to take on two Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opponents. The V-Hawks swept Roosevelt University on Friday behind scores of 25-16, 25-13, 25-19. On Saturday, Viterbo took on Olivet Nazarene in a closely contested match in which they fell just short: 27-25, 28-26, 20-25, 21-25, and 13-15.

Game One - Roosevelt:

  • The V-Hawk defense was impressive throughout the match, allowing only one player on Roosevelt to hit positive.
  • Viterbo's offense did not put up their typical numbers, but was still able to get the sweep.
  • Jacob Nonn led the team with eight kills, followed by Juan Banda with seven.
  • Andrew Lepage dished out 20 assists while My Tang and Banda each had six digs.

Game Two - Olivet Nazarene:

  • The V-Hawks got out to a hot start in set one, taking a 4-0 lead after an ace by Tang. Olivet came roaring back, taking a 14-9 lead after a Viterbo hitting error. The V-Hawks turned the momentum back, going on a 12-3 run to take a 21-17 lead. Olivet wouldn't let that run deter them, however, as they tied the game at 21 before the two teams traded points until the V-Hawks got back-to-back points after a Tiger error and a Nonn kill to take the set.
  • The two teams traded points once again in set two, with the biggest lead coming from the V-Hawks at 11-5. The teams tied at 21 before the V-Hawks got another Nonn kill and Tiger error to take set two.
  • Olivet got out to a blazing start in set three, going on a 7-0 run to begin the set. The V-Hawks were never able to overcome that deficit despite strong efforts.
  • The V-Hawks and the Tigers were back-and-forth again to begin set four, but the Tigers used a four-point run near the beginning of the set to create enough cushion to secure the win.
  • Olivet came out in set five by taking the first three points before the V-Hawks closed the gap at 6-6. Down 14-13, a V-Hawk service error prevented Viterbo from making any further push, and the Tigers took the set and match.
  • Nonn collected 16 kills, followed by Banda with 15 and Dane Kerkman with 12. Lepage collected 50 assists while three V-Hawks had double-digit kills, led by Andy Roungtakoun with 21, and Tang and Banda with 13.
