Lakers Honor Senior Kayan Abdou in Pre-Match Ceremony; Drop Home Finale to Viterbo in Straight Sets
CHICAGO – The Roosevelt University men's volleyball team closed out the home portion of its 2022 schedule with a straight set loss to Viterbo University (Wis.) on "Senior Night" on Friday, March 18 at the Goodman Center. With the CCAC Conference loss, the Lakers fell to 0-12 in league play and 0-19 overall this season.
Prior to the match, the Lakers men's volleyball program honored Kayan Abdou, the team's lone senior playing in his last home match, in a ceremony to commemorate his Roosevelt career.
Following the ceremony in the opening set, the Lakers scored the first point on a Drake Schleihs kill, but the V-Hawks rattled off the next four points. Roosevelt pulled to within 4-3 with Viterbo following with another run, scoring five straight points to lead 9-3. The Lakers responded with three consecutive points to make it a 9-6 score, but once again, the V-Hawks took control and won the set 25-16.
The second set was all Viterbo, as the visitors jumped out to a 7-1 advantage and never looked back, cruising to a 25-13 set victory for a 2-0 match lead.
The third set was a competitive affair with the two teams trading the lead multiple times before being tied 10-10. The V-Hawks scored the next three points and expanded their lead to as large as six points. However, the Lakers cut the deficit to 21-19 on a Shawn McCarthy kill only to have Viterbo regain command, winning 25-19 to sweep the match.
