Viterbo Earns Big 5-0 Home Win

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Men's Soccer team defeated Dakota Wesleyan University 5-0 at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. The V-Hawks improve to 3-0 while the Tigers fall to 0-1-1.

Dakota Wesleyan would attack quickly to start the game with a shot on goal by Isaias Pio 34 seconds in, but Viterbo goalie Ernesto Ascenzo was there for the save. Conner Erdmann would take the first shot on goal for the V-Hawks in the 16th minute, but goalie Hunter Birozy saved the attempt. Sebastian Acosta's corner kick helped Matteo Galeotti's find Sammy Ankaoglu for a header goal to go up 1-0. Less than a minute later, Erdmann put in a rebound to put Viterbo up 2-0. VU would attempt four more corner kicks before halftime, but neither team would record any more shots on goal.

Ascenzo would save another shot on goal from Pio in the 55th minute, and in the 62nd minute, Callum Smith found Alfie Gyurkovits, who's sliding shot slipped past Birozy to extend the Viterbo lead to 3-0. The V-Hawks would keep their foot on the gas the entire game, as at the 82:58 mark Marcelo Puertas led Joaquin Eichhorn to a 1-on-1 situation with the goalie that he converted for the 4-0 lead. At 84:36, Smith's free kick found Polyzois Douvas for the final goal of the game and the 5-0 win.

The V-Hawks would outshoot the Tigers 22-2 including 8-2 on goal. Viterbo took all nine shots on goal in the game.

Ascenzo (3-0) had two saves, while Birozy (0-1) had five.

The V-Hawks return to the field on Sunday, August 28 at home to take on St. Francis (Ill.) at 11 AM.
