Warriors Outlast V-Hawks in High-Scoring Affair

FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Viterbo University Baseball team split a pair of games against Waldorf University (Iowa) in a doubleheader on Sunday, winning 10-2 before losing 15-18. The V-Hawks now sit at 10-34 (9-11 NSAA), while the Warriors hold a 19-22 (9-11 NSAA) record.

Viterbo took control from the very start, as Spencer Hans' single brought home Brett Stuessel in the top of the first, then Marcus Hornacek's single brought in Cody Wells, Hans, and Blake Warner. Waldorf scored once in the third, but Viterbo responded in the fourth on a Stuessel RBI double and Hans RBI single. Hornacek homered to start the top of the fifth, answered by a lead of solo home run by WU in the bottom. The V-Hawks added a trio of insurance runs in the seventh as Camden Smith scored on an error, and Gavin Daniel homered with Ryan Mesa on base.

Stuessel, Daniel, Warner, Hans, and Hornacek all posted multiple hits, as did two Warriors. Brandon Jaenke (W, 3-7) earned the win with eight strikeouts, while Zach Meyer (L, 4-2) took the loss.

The V-Hawks kept the momentum going in the second game, as Warner started the game with an WBI double, followed by a Hans sacrifice fly and Warner reaching home on a wild pitch. Daniel added another home run on the day with a two-RBI shot in the second. Waldorf would score in the bottom of the second on an error, but the V-Hawks extended their lead in the third with a Wells RBI single, a Hornacek RBI single, and a Mesa RBI bringing in Wells. In the fourth, Warner singled to score Stuessel, and Hornacek doubled, scoring two more runs. WU scored one on a RBI grounder in the bottom of the frame. In the seventh, Daniel would score on a wild pitch to bring the score to 12-2. However, the Warriors began to rally, scoring eight runs on six hits, including a grand slam, to close the gap to 12-10. In the ninth, Waldorf evened the score with two runs on one hit. In the 11th inning, VU took the lead again with two home runs, a solo from Warner, and a two-run shot form Wells. However, Waldorf had the last say, responding with a two-RBI single and a game-winning walk off grand slam.

Warner led the V-Hawks with five hits, four runs scored, and three RBIs. Hornacek, Wells, Hans, Stuessel, and Daniel all had multiple hits too. Ian Carr had four hits and five RBIs for the Bruins. Kyle Burns (L, 1-1) recorded the loss, while Jake Ouweneel recorded six strikeouts. Ryuya Kato (W, 2-1) earned the win.

The V-Hawks return to action on Friday, April 26 at Bellevue University (Iowa).
