FOREST CITY, Iowa - Trailing by 10 runs in the seventh inning, Waldorf staged a remarkable comeback and won on a walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning to top Viterbo on Waldorf senior day.
Viterbo won the opening game of a doubleheader Sunday, 10-2, over Waldorf. The second game was more of the same, as Viterbo led 12-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. Waldorf needed to score at least one run to prolong the game. They scored much more than that. Zach Meyer started the comeback with a lead-off double. Ryan Webster followed with an RBI single. Two more runs scored to make the score 12-5. Later, with the bases loaded, Kolby Amaral launched a shot over the right field fence for a grand slam to pull Waldorf within three at 12-9. Meyer then singled and Webster followed with his second RBI hit of the inning with a double to deep center. Waldorf scored eight times in the seventh to make the score 12-10.
The score stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth. Riley Rauch beat out an infield hit to lead off the frame. Amaral walked and Meyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Webster drew another walk to cut the deficity to one at 12-11. Atticus Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to left that scored pinch-runner Nathan Westfield and remarkable, the score was tied at 12. A double play ended the inning, sending the game to extra innings.
Waldorf thought they had the game won in the 10th, but a double play ended that threat. Viterbo scored three runs in the top of the 11th to take a 15-12 lead. Again, Waldorf would not give up. With two runners on the bottom of the 11th, a Smith single up the middle scored two to pull the Warriors within one at 15-14. Ryan Meyer and Juan Jorge were both hit by pitches and the bases were loaded with two outs. Ian Carr was the last hope for Waldorf. He didn't disappoint. He launched a shot over the right field for a walk-off grand slam. Remarkably, the Warriors came all the way back from a 10-run deficit to win 18-15. It was the second grand slam Waldorf hit in the second game. Carr was 4-for-7 in the second game with five RBI. Zach Meyer had three hits while four others had two hits apiece.
Waldorf (19-22, 9-11 in NSAA) heads out of conference for a tilt Tuesday at Morningside.
