Barry Fried was named the Viterbo University Director of Athletics in 1999, and enters his 25^th year in the role. He was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference AD of the Year in 2009-2010, and the North Star Athletic Association AD of the Year in 2021-22.

Prior to being named the Athletics Director, Fried spent five years as an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Viterbo.

“It's been great getting to know our student-athletes on a personal level and seeing them succeed in school and in their sport,” says Fried. “It's rewarding to see their growth and development and exciting to follow their career and personal journey after Viterbo.”

Fried received his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration - Marketing from UW-Eau Claire, and his Master's Degree in Exercise and Sports Science - Athletics Administration from UW-La Crosse.

During his tenure as AD, Viterbo Athletics has added 13 new varsity programs, and Fried received the Viterbo Servant Leader Award in 2004-05.

The Fountain City, Wis. native also spent three years as an assistant boys’ basketball coach as Eleva-Strum HS prior to joining Viterbo.

“I really enjoy working with our coaches and staff to provide the best experience we can for our athletes,” continued Fried. “Every day is different and there are many challenges, but that's what makes the job very interesting.”

Fried lives in La Crosse with his wife, Laurie. They have a son Bennett and daughter Sierra and two cats, Misty and Willow
