V-Hawks Claim Another Win on the Road

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Women's Volleyball claim victory over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) (25-22, 25-16, 20-25, 20-25, 16-14) on Friday evening. The V-Hawks rise to 10-7 (CCAC 3-0) while the Fighting Bees fall to 4-8 (CCAC 0-2).

The V-Hawks would open the match by taking the first two points keeping a narrow lead with the help of Martina McGrath's kills. Cailie Kowal's with a service ace would let the V-Hawks begin to pull away in the lead. Maddie Connor would set up Izzy Jahr to put the V-Hawks within five points of taking the first set, though the Fighting Bee's would turn around and go on a four point run. Grace Peyron put an end to it with a kill assisted by Kowal with a score of 25-22.

Jada Mitchell would aid VU in taking a 5-1 lead, with the help of Connor. The V-Hawks would keep the lead as Sadie Treptow would complete a series of attacks. SAU looked to make a comeback in the 23rd point of the set but Casey Frankland and McGrath stopped the advance with a block, followed shortly by another block from McGrath and Treptow ending set two.

The Fighting Bee's would claim the first point of the third set with a block, McGrath would respond with a kill from Kenidi McCabe. In the battle for the lead Jahr would tie up the score 9-9, but St. Ambrose wouldn't let up at the net. Mitchell would make one last attempt for the V-Hawks in the third set though it would not be enough, sending the match to set four.

Connor set up Jahr to open the fourth set with a kill, followed by a kill by Treptow. McCabe set the V-Hawks on the path with a service ace, though VU couldn't take the lead.  Viterbo's Mitchell-Kowal duo put up a fight with a  kill to bring the score to 15-16 midway through. Mitchell would once again be set up by Connor to close the gap for the lead though the Fighting Bee's would claim set four 20-25.

With the match on the line Mitchell would open up the fifth set with a solo block for the lead, followed by two kills set up by Kowal. McGrath would take the lead once again with a kill at the 9-8 mark. With a battle once again for the lead Mitchell would complete three kills from Kowal to end the match.

Mitchell led the V-Hawks attack with 22 kills, while Connor led with 33 assists and Kowal with 25. McCabe would take 20 digs for the V-Hawks while the Fighting Bees Alexa Orozco would lead with 19 kills, and Ines Marques with 28 assists.

The V-Hawks return to action Saturday September 14th as they take on Park University and Mount Mercy.
