OMAHA, Neb. – The Viterbo University Women's Volleyball team, ranked #5 in the NAIA Women's Volleyball Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll, finished their weekend at the College of Saint Mary Labor Day Classic with a win over Concordia University (Neb) (25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 18-25) and a loss against Saint Francis University (Ind) (25-12, 25-17, 25-16). The V-Hawks now sit at 5-6, the Bulldogs rise to 7-1, and the Cougars fall to 7-5.
The V-Hawks would be in a battle from the beginning of the first set supported by a block by Jada Mitchell and Grace Peyron. A kill by Maddie Connor would tie up the set 8-8. Two kills by Peyron assisted by Callie Kowal would win the V-Hawks set one of the match.
Kenidi McCabe's service ace would score the V-Hawks the first point of set two. Soon followed by a Kowal assisted kill by Martina McGrath and a Connor assisted kill by Sadie Treptow. Peyron would take the last kill of the set for the V-Hawks ending in 23-25.
Treptow would take the first kill of the set from Connor. Mitchell from Connor would continue the action for the V-Hawks until the Bulldogs would pull away taking set three 25-19.
Though the V-Hawks would begin set four with a ball handling error Mitchell would recover with a kill. The Bulldogs response was to attack, pulling away in the lead, Peyron would have the last kill of the match for the V-Hawks at 22-17.
Mitchell would lead the V-Hawks in kills, while McCabe would take 13 digs, Kowal not far behind with 11 and 16 assists and Connor would have 20. Gabi Nordaker would lead the Bulldogs with 13 kills.
Hailee Halverson would lend a hand in the first two points of match two of the day with a kill followed by an assisted block with Mitchell. McCabe drawing a pair of ace's would propel the V-Hawks forward midway through the set at 15-7. Mitchell from Kowal would be the V-Hawks last kill of the set ending 25-12.
The V-Hawks would keep the energy taking the lead 12-4 in set two. McGrath and Halverson continue to capitalize on sets from Connor. An ace from Connor would be the last ace of the set ending in 25-17.
The Connor Halverson duo would be back at it to start set three with a kill for point one. Followed by a block by Mitchell and Peyron. Casey Frankland's kills supported by connor would be the last kill setting up Connor for a service ace to end the match in three.
Halverson would lead the V-Hawks in kills with 9, while Kowal would have 16 assists. Mitchell would contribute 6 blocks for VU, while Paige and Teigen Fortkamp would lead the Cougars in kills and assists.
The V-Hawks return to action on Thursday, September 5 as they take on Judson University.
