V-Hawks Power Through Spartans in Three Sets
LA CROSSE Wis. – The Viterbo University Women's Volleyball team, ranked #5 in the NAIA Top 25 Preseason Coaches Poll, secured their second win of the season on Saturday defeating Missouri Baptist University 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-22). The V-Hawks now sit 2-5 on the year.
The V-Hawks started off strong in the first set with kills from Hailee Halverson and Grace Peyron. The V-Hawks began to pull away in the lead initiated by Martina McGrath's kill assisted by Cailie Kowal. The Spartan's looked to advance but Casey Frankland came in with a kill from Maddie Connor to continue to lead. The final point of the set was hit by McGrath, ending in 25-22.
Peyron and McGrath once again set the V-Hawks in motion dueling with the Spartans for the lead. At 15-18 VU went on a run supported by Sadie Treptow, Halverson, and Frankland, with Treptow dealing the final blow of the set with a score of 25-16.
The V-Hawks battle wasn't over yet as they volleyed the score with the Spartans once again in the third set. McGrath turned on the heat with a kill from Kowal followed by a solo block. Halverson and the rest of the V-Hawks dished out kills chipping away at the game to remain. Izzy Jahr, Treptow, and McGrath swung the final kills to the game, ending the final set 25-22.
Halverson led the V-Hawks with nine kills, Kowal had 19 assists, while Connor had 16 and McCabe took 10 digs. Gabi Jakubowska had 11 kills for the Spartans, and Maiana Coelho had 22 assists.
The V-Hawks return to action on Friday August 30th hosted by the College of Saint Mary's CSM Labor Day Classic.
