Nine Match Win Streak Ends at #12 Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, ND – The Viterbo University Women's Volleyball team, ranked #5 in the most recent NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll, had their nine match wining streak snapped on Thursday afternoon as they fell 1-3 (22-25, 27-29, 25-23, 18-25) to #12 University of Jamestown (ND). The V-Hawks fall to 25-4 (9-0 CCAC) on the year, while the Jimmies improve to 21-7 (13-1 GPAC).

The Jimmies had multiple errors early in the opening set, and Grace Rohde's kill gave the V-Hawks a 7-6 lead. UJ ran four straight to take back the lead, but Rohde eneded the run, and Mitchell would tie the match again at 10-10. Jamestown held onto a small lead, and after Rohde and Martina McGrath combined for two blocks to bring the score to 19-20, UJ pulled away for the 25-22 win.

Mitchell and Marissa Kleman started the second set with two consecutive blocks, and kills from Kenzie Winker and Maddie Connor gave Viterbo the slight advantage. Mitchell continued to shine on defense, recording block assists with Kleman and Sadie Treptow leading to a 14-11 lead, but after a Winker Kill, the Jimmies scored four straight to tie the match at 16-16. They would then pull away, 22-19, but McGrath and Treptow each had a kill and combined for a block to tie the match again, but the Jimmies would have the final run of the set, winning 29-27.

McGrath had a solo block and a Kleman-assisted block to start the third, and a spread out offensive attack had Viterbo leading 12-10. Rohde recorded three kills during a 4-0 run to go up 20-16, but a huge run for the Jimmies gave them the lead again. 22-21. Connor ended the run with a kill, and McGrath recorded the final two kills for the 25-23 win.

After a service ace from Connor to start the fourth, Jamestown went on a run to take a 7-4 lead. Kenidi McCabe followed that with an ace of her own, followed by a kill by Winker to tie the set. After a Mitchell-Grace Peyron block brought the score to 12-11, UJ began to pull away, going up 18-12, and despite a late kill and block from Rohde, the V-Hawks were not able to come back, and Jamestown won 25-18.

Rohde had a team-high 17 kills to go with 20 digs, and Winker had a 13-kill, 16-dig double-double of her own. Connor recorded 21 assists while Cailie Kowal dished 19 and 11 digs. McCabe had a team high 24 digs and McGrath had six blocks.

Aleah Zieske had a match-high 25 kills for the Jimmies, while Lily Bertsch had 25 assists and Grace Hegerle had 27 digs.

The V-Hawks return to action on Friday, October 27, 2023 at Mayville State (ND) for their final road conference match.
