V-Hawks Top Mayville; Remain Undefeated in Conference Play

LA CROSSE, Wis. The Viterbo Women's Volleyball team, ranked #8 in the most recent NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll, hosted Mayville State University at the R.W. Beggs Sr. Gymnasium on Saturday. The V-Hawks defeated the Comets 3-1 (25-20, 25-15, 23-25, 25-20). Viterbo improves to 23-6 overall and remains undefeated in conference play. The Comets drop 14-1 overall and 5-5 in league play.

The teams started off trading points in set one tieing the game at 6-6. The Comets started would gain a slight lead 8-12 with kills by Samantha Passa and Elora Passa. Three kills by V-Hawk Grace Rohde would help Viterbo tie the game at 17-17. Rohde recorded two more kills forcing a timeout by the Comets at 22-18. The V-Hawks came out on top in set one 25-20 with a service ace by Lauryn Sobasky and a kill by Mariah Calkins.

Set two started off similar with kills by Rohde and Martina McGrath tieing at 9-9. The V-Hawks quickly stretched their lead 17-12 with Rohde adding three more kills and Kenzie Winker adding two. The V-Hawks would hold the Comets to 15 points while Winker contributed three more kills along with Jada Mitchell adding one bringing the score to 23-15. Mitchell and Rohde would each contribute a kill finishing set two for the V-Hawks 25-15.

The teams woud again trade points starting set three tieing the game at 10-10. Mayville would go on a run with two service aces and two kills by Samantha Passa leading 12-15. Viterbo and Mayvill traded points with the Comets maintaining a slight lead 17-20. Viterbo fought back with Mitchell and Winker adding two kills each and helping the V-Hawks take the lead 23-22 forcing a timeout by the Comets. Mayville would claim the next three points to win set three 23-25.

The fourth set tied at 7-7 with multiple kills by the V-Hawks. The teams would trade points while Viterbo's Mitchell and Rohde each record two kills bringing the score to 14-12. Three service aces by Mayville's Rachel Hill would put the Comets up 17-20. The V-Hawks would go on to score the next eight points of the game with Winker adding four kills ending set four 25-20.

Lauryn Sobasky led the team with 31 assists while teammate Adrianna Reinhart recorded 29 digs. Grace Rohde added 22 kills for the V-Hawks followed by Kenzie Winker with 18. 

Mayville's Samantha Passa led the team with 12 kills. Elora Passa recorded 20 assists while Natalie Hadrava added 25 digs for the Comets. Elora Pass and Ashley Pyburn contributed 4 block assists.

The V-Hawks will travel to North Dakota to take on Dickinson State University on Thursday, October 27 at 7:00PM CST.
