V-Hawks Sweep Comets on the Road

MAYVILLE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Women's Volleyball team, ranked 8th in the most recent NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, claimed a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) at Mayville State University (N.D.) on Friday night. The V-Hawks improve to 14-6, and 4-0 in North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) play, while the Comets fall to 6-12 (1-3 NSAA).

After the V-Hawks took the first two points of the game, the Comets would put together a short run to take a 4-6 lead. Grace Rohde put down two consecutive kills to put Viterbo up 8-6, and Kenzie Winker and Jada Mitchell's kills helped extend the lead to 16-12. Mayville brought the game back within one, and the teams would trade points until Winker's kills put Viterbo up 22-19. Mitchell contributed to the final three points for the V-Hawks, including two kills, and a Winker assisted block to give the opening set to Viterbo 25-20.

The second set would start close, with seven ties by the time the game reached 10-10. Winker's kills would spark a V-Hawk 9-2 that included kills by Mitchell, and Martina McGrath, and an ace by Cailie Kowal. Mayville rallied and brought the back within one at 22-21. Viterbo would end the set 25-21 with a block by McGrath and Mitchell.

The final set started with the V-Hawks getting up 8-5 including a kill by setter Lauryn Sobasky. The Comets tied the game at 12-12, but Mariah Calkins and Marissa Kleman helped Viterbo start to pull away. Rohde contributed to Viterbo's final four points, including three kills and a Calkins assisted block.

Winker led all players with 17 kills while hitting .273, Mitchell added 15 kills on 22 attempts (.591) and Rohde had 14 while also hitting .571. Sobasky had a game high 28 assists, and Kowal had 20. Adrianna Reinhart was the only player in the game with double digit digs at 20, and Mitchell had two blocks.

Elora Passa led the comets with eight kills, Rachel Hill had 14 assists, three different players had seven digs, and Abby Cox had one block.

The V-Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 1 at Presentation College (S.D.) at 1 PM.
