V-Hawks fight for their road win against the Trojans
MADISON, S.D. – The Viterbo Women's Volleyball team (24-1) improved to 6-0 in NSAA play and extended their win streak to 17 games on Thursday night when they beat Dakota State University (11-5) 3-1. The V-Hawks won behind scores of 22-25, 25-18, 26-24, and 25-14.
The V-Hawks came out strong in set one, coming out with a 5-1 lead, but Dakota State never let up. Strong defense allowed the Trojans to hold the V-Hawks to a .051 hitting percentage and take the set. Set two was evenly matched to begin. Tied at 12-12, VU went on a 6-1 scoring run to widen their lead to 18-13, capped by a kill by Maya Roberts. The Trojans could get no closer than four points at 18-14 as Viterbo finished set two with a 7-4 run. Set three saw more tight play as neither team led by more than four points throughout the set. Down 21-23, the V-Hawks went on a 3-0 run to bring the game to set point. Dakota State was able to fight off two set points before a V-Hawk block sealed the set. The V-Hawks were much improved in set three. Tied at seven points each, the V-Hawks went on a 9-1 run to separate themselves. Kenzie Winker sealed the set and match with a kill.
Katie Frohmader finished with a team-high 14 kills, followed closely by Roberts with 13. Kenzie Winker added nine kills and three blocks. Abbey Johnson led with 22 assists while Adrianna Reinhart collected 19 digs. The V-Hawks will travel to Bellevue University tomorrow night to face the eighth-ranked Bruins.
