
Volleyball Sweeps William Penn in Tournament Opener
LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Volleyball team (13-1) was back in action at R.W. Beggs Sr. Gymnasium on Thursday night to face the Statesmen of William Penn University (5-1). The V-Hawks swept the Statesmen behind scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-14.
Set one began with a huge Viterbo run to make it 7-0, capped with a block by Kenzie Winker (JR/Holmen, Wis.) and Mariah Calkins (SR/Sun Prairie, Wis.). The V-Hawk lead would grow to as many as 10 points as they closed out the set 25-15.
Set two saw much more back-and-forth action. After being tied at six, the V-Hawks were able to limit runs by William Penn and push a lead. The V-Hawks closed out the set with a kill by Kaitlyn Zunker (SO/Reedsburg, Wis.), 25-15.
The V-Hawks began set three on another hot start, going up 12-3. An error by the Statesmen gave the V-Hawks their biggest lead of the game at 20-9. Viterbo was able to maintain that margin and finished the set with a kill by Kenzie Winker to win 25-14.
The V-Hawks hit a whopping .362 compared to William Penn's .120. Maya Roberts (SR/Watertown, Wis.) led the V-Hawks with 16 kills. Abbey Johnson (JR/Brodhead, Wis.) led the team with 20 assists while Adrianna Reinhart (SR/Caledonia, Minn.) collected 12 digs. Johnson and Reinhart also led the team with two aces a piece.
The Viterbo University Volleyball team will return tomorrow night to face #5 Dordt University in day two of the Viterbo Days Inn Classic. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
