Johnson Reaches A Standard in First Meet of the Year

RIPON, Wis. – The Viterbo University Women's Track and Field team started their 2023-24 Indoor season at the Ripon College Winter Open on Saturday. The V-Hawks finished 2nd out of 8 teams with 102 points. UW-Oshkosh claimed the team title with 228 points.

Emma Johnson claimed two gold medals on the day, first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.17 seconds, and then in the pole vault, clearing 3.66m (12-00.00) and surpassing NAIA "A" Standard, and setting a new school record, being the first V-Hawk to ever clear 12 ft. Braylee Hyatt recorded the best mark in the long jump, winning the event in her first meet as a V-Hawk. The V-Hawks 4x200 meter relay team also took first place with a time of 1:48.58.

Other V-Hawks to earn medals include Vanessa Thomas taking second in the 3,000 (11:23.41), Tori Gerber earning silver in the 800 (2:24.30), Claudia Schunk taking third in the 60-meter dash, and Emily Howell and Olivia Wingo tying for third in the pole vault, each clearing 3.18m (10-05.25).

The 4x400 team took fourth place, finishing in 4:30.63 Ashley Veronen's time of 9.36 earned her 4th in the 60-hurdles, while Lillia Chvatal was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.15m (16-10.75), Jayna Schema took 6th in the 60-meter with a time of 8.31, and Gerber finished 6th in the mile, recording a time of 5:32.58.

The V-Hawks return to action on Friday, December 8 at the University of Minnesota Ice Breaker Open.
