V-Hawks Secure Victory
CROWN POINT, Ind. – The Viterbo University Women's Soccer team takes down Indiana University Northwest 1-0 Saturday afternoon. The V-Hawks rise to 7-5-1 (CCAC 4-3-1) while the Red Hawks fall to 5-8-3 (CCAC 2-5-1).
As the game kicked off teams would fight for possession in the middle looking to gain control of the game. The V-Hawks would look to gain control with a header shot saved in the 8th minute by Casey Hill which would be followed by Ellie Hedges landing a shot wide of the goal seconds later. Two minutes later Maya Bubber's would find Evy Shaw in stride and with a touch around the goalie Shaw would give the V-Hawks the 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Veerle Vriens would keep VU in the game as she recorded three saves over a 12-minute span. Looking for goal one last time before halftime Jenna Bennet would land a shot on goal being saved by the Red Hawks Isabel Escalera.
The Red Hawks would start the second half quick getting two shots off in less than a minute and requiring Vriens to make another save. Fouls would be traded back and forth by both teams throughout the half as it became a physical match. Shots on goal in the 73rd minute by Kelcie Karweick and in the 78th minute by Bennet would be the last offensive opportunity for the V-Hawks. In the 82nd minute with the game on the line Hadley Dammer would make a goal line header save to keep the V-Hawks alive. Escaping the last stitch effort by the Red Hawks the V-Hawks record their 6th shutout of the season with Vriens recording 8 saves.
The V-Hawks return to action this Tuesday, October 22nd as they head to Bellevue for a non-conference matchup.
