V-Hawks Upset Trolls in CCAC Tournament

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Viterbo University Women's Soccer team, the #7 seed in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament, upset #2 Trinity Christian College (Ill.) 1-1, 3-1 penalty kicks, in the first round of the CCAC tournament on Friday.

Veerle Vriens saved the first shot on goal of the game, an attempt by Kara Amidon in the fourth minute, and Jenna Bennett then recorded the fist shot on goal for the V-Hawks 10 minutes later. After over 10 minutes of no shots, the V-Hawks scored off a Trinity Christian own goal. The Trolls had a final attempt on goal to end the half, but Viterbo kept the 1-0 lead into the half.

Christian Samantha Wind evened the score at 55:36 on ana unassisted goal, followed by two more saves by Vriens. The V-Hawks had a pair of shots go wide, and Brooke Clements attempt on target was saved in the 84th minute. Bennet's corner kick as time expired was not enough and the match went into overtime.

TCC recorded two shots on goal in the first overtime, while Ella Herman had a pair of shots miss and the game went into OT2.

Each team had a shot on goal in the second overtime, but again the period was scoreless and the match went to penalty kicks.

Jenna Bennet and Jade Maldonado each hit their first shots, while Ella Herman and Liza Gavalova missed the second round of attempts. Brooke Clements made the third penalty, but Demi Scibetta did not. In the deciding round, Rachel Kinney scored and Kara Amidon missed for the V-Hawk win.

Three V-Hawks had shots on goal, while Amidon had five on target for Trinity Christian. Veerle Vriens (T, 2-1-3) recorded nine saves, while Michelle Urribarri (T, 12-3-4) had four.

The V-Hawks return to action on Tuesday, November 7 at Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in the CCAC Tournament Semifinals.
