Breuchel's Hat Trick Leads V-Hawks Over Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Viterbo University Women's Soccer team earned a 5-0 win at NCAA Division III Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) on Sunday afternoon. The V-Hawks improve to 6-4-1, while the Cobbers fall to 3-8-1.

Kelcie Karweick would push the pace quickly, with a shot on goal less than a minute into the game, but it was saved by Cobber keeper Breanna Nelson. Viterbo goalie Molly Ripley would record her first save of the game in the fifth minute, and Lauren Wedig had a shot on goal seven minutes later. Grace Breuchel put in the first goal of the game at the 20:29 mark, assisted by Jenna Bennett. Alex Little recorded two assists in rapid succession, one to Karweick at 26:21, and one to Breuchel at 27:24. Viterbo would take three more shots in the half, and Moorhead took two, but none of these would find the net.

Madison Williams would take over at goalie in the second half for the V-Hawks, and record two saves in the first six minutes. Karweick had another shot on goal saved, but Breuchel converted an unassisted goal to complete her hat trick at 59:03. The Cobbers had five shots over the next 20 minutes, but it would be Rachel Kinney that would score the next goal on an assist from Bennett at 75:57. Moorhead got off three more shots, but Williams saved the final attempt with 1:06 left in the game to hold the V-Hawks clean sheet.

Each team took 15 shots, but 11 were on goal for Viterbo and just six for Moorhead. VU took just one more corner kick (3-2) than CMU. Ripley (4-1-1) would record the win with two saves, and Williams finished with four. Nelson (2-2-1) recorded six saves.

The V-Hawks return to action Friday, October 14 against Georgia Gwinett in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the Continental Athletic Conference Classic.
