V-Hawks Blowout Knights, Breuchel Sets School Record

NEW ULM, Minn. – The Viterbo University Women's Soccer team earned their first win of the 2022 season, 8-2 against Martin Luther College (Minn.) at the MLC Soccer Field on Monday Afternoon. The V-Hawks improve to 1-2-1, while the Knights drop to 1-1.

The V-Hawks would set the tone for the game early, with Mikayla Lazarski taking the first shot of the game at 5:00 and finding the net on an assist from Rachel Kinney. Two minutes later, Grace Breuchel put in her first goal of the game to put the V-Hawks up 2-0. Jenna Bennett had a shot on goal saved in the eighth minute, and Bruechel scored her second goal in the 11th. Kaitlin Butler took the first Knights shot of the game, saved by Anna Becker, at 18:59. In the 31st minute, Lazarski set up Breuchel, and she completed the first half hat-trick, putting Viterbo up 4-0, and Kennedy Alves assisted Elle Hager at 42:17 to give the V-Hawks a five-goal lead going into halftime.

Breuchel stayed hot into the second half, putting in a goal, assisted by Alex Little, six minutes into the second half. But less than a minute later, Hannah Schroeder put in a Hailey Rice assisted-goal to break the shutout. Rice would then put in a goal of her own, brining the score to 6-2. Little and Hadley Dammer set up Bruechel in the 61 minute for her school-record tying fifth goal of the day. Two minutes later, Hager would find Bruechel to complete her second-half hat trick. Her sixth goal of the day set a new school record, passing Molly Machometa and Jenny Schlesinger. Kelsie Karwieck would have three more shots on goal late in the game, but neither team would score and Viterbo would claim the 8-2 win.

Viterbo outshot Martin Luther 27-4, including 18-4 on goal, and Viterbo would take all four corner kicks in the game. Anna Becker (1-0-0) earned the win, recording two saves, while Grace Sievert (1-2) finished with 10 saves for the Knights.

The V-Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 7, as they play host to North Central University (Minn.).
