V-Hawks Home Opener Ends in a Draw

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Women's Soccer team's home opener ended in a 1-1 draw against Trinity Christian University (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletic Complex. The V-Hawks now sit at 0-2-1 while the Trolls are 1-2-2.

Trinity would take the first two shots of the game, neither on goal, before Selah Hopkins put in a goal assisted by Demi Scibetta in the 11th minute. Three more shots by Trinity came, including two saves by Viterbo goalie Molly Ripley, before Lauren Wedig took the first shot for Viterbo, resulting in a goal. Jenna Bennett recorded the assist on the goal, which came at the 24:26 mark in the first half. Mikayla Lazarski took another shot on goal in the 30th minute, and Ripley recorded three more saves, but the 1-1 tie would hold into halftime.

Lazarski's header in the 56th minute was saved by the Trolls goalie Michelle Urribarri, which was the only shot on goal by either team for over 20 minutes. Grace Breuchel's header in the 79th minute was also saved. Ripley would have one final save at 86:33, and Bruechel had an attempt at a game-winning header with 33 seconds left, but the attempt went wide.

Trinity outshot Viterbo 14-9, including 8-4 on goal and both teams took two corner kicks. Ripley (0-0-1) had seven saves, while Urribarri (1-1-2) had three saves.

The V-Hawks return to the pitch on Monday, September 5 at Martin Luther College (Minn.).
