V-Hawks Lead in High Energy Matchup
LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team came out on top in St Francis University rematch 67-55. The V-Hawks rise to 13-11 (CCAC 6-10) while the Fighting Saints sink to 18-6 (CCAC 11-5).
Held to zero for the first two minutes, Macy Stellner knocked down a three followed by Lauryn Goettl making a layup off her own missed shot quickly bringing the score within one. Goettl would then find Marley Hughes for three to tie up the game for the first time. The V-Hawks finding their rhythm on offense would see Hughes making plays with three assists back to back to end the first.
Hughes would start the scoring in the second quarter with a three from Aubrey Dorn before dishing an assist to Stellner for the jumper. With less than 30 seconds to go in the first half Hughes would make a move to find Goettl for the final layup.
The V-Hawks opening the second half with a three point lead would build on with Stellner's assist to Nicole Johnson before hitting a jumper and a layup. Pearla Teko-Folly boxing out under the hoop would grab an offensive rebound for the put back putting the V-Hawks up by 12. Carrying their momentum Hughes would find Johnson under the hoop for the layup, then draining a jumper followed by Drew hitting the three from a Hughes pass.
Emily McCurdy with 10 minutes to go in the game would pull up for a jumper and dish a pass to Johnson shortly after. The V-Hawks drawing a series of fouls would put Hughes at the line to knock down both shots before also finding Johnson for the three.
Hughes led the V-Hawks with a stellar performance from the free throw line. Le'lani Harris led the Fighting Saints with 24.
The V-Hawks outshot the Fighting Saints from the floor 46.9% to 25.8% and from three 35.3% to 15.2% though committed more turnovers 22-18.
The V-Hawks return to action Wednesday February 12 at home to host St. Ambrose.
