V-Hawks Come out on Top
LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team downed Calumet College of St. Joseph Saturday afternoon 97-40. The V-Hawks rise to 11-9 (CCAC 4-8) while the Crimson Wave fall to 2-18 (CCAC 0-12).
Emily McCurdy would take the forefront for the V-Hawks with the opening five points between a three and a layup. The V-Hawks holding the Crimson Wave to 2, find Lauryn Goettl a force on defense with rebounds and steals before topping it all off with a three from Marley Hughes. With two minutes to go Nicole Johnson would post up for the layup before delivering a block and heading to the line until the clock ran out.
Quick in the second Goettl would drain a three. Kira John off an offensive rebound would find McCurdy for the layup setting the V-Hawks up by 20. On a fast break Macy Stellner would find Carly Drew for the layup, Drew soon after adding a jumper. Drew continuing to power through the quarter would knock down another three before dishing out back to back assists until the buzzer.
Stellner opening the second half with five points and an assists for Johnson. Viterbo strongly in the lead continued to work hard on offense with Taylor Jacobson dealing out assists off her own rebounds. Less than a minute to go and Kira John would find Madison Hugdahl for one last jumper of the quarter.
The V-Hawks with a significant lead would find Gabby Fors dishing out the assist and going in for a layup of her own. Abby Ward and John tag teaming the final six points, with free throws and layups.
McCurdy led the V-Hawks from the floor with 15 points. Priscilla Diaz led the Crimson Wave with 12.
The V-Hawks outshot from the floor 40.5% to 25.9% and outrebounded 48-36.
The V-Hawks return to action Wednesday January 29 on the road at Olivet Nazarene.
