V-Hawks Win Conference Opener
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team claimed the win over Holy Cross College in the conference opener on Wednesday evening 81-78. The V-Hawks improve to 6-1 (1-0 CCAC) while the Saints fall to 4-3 (0-1 CCAC).
Emily McCurdy would open up the game in a big way with a shot from three from Marley Hughes, leading the V-Hawks to dominate possession in the next few minutes, keeping the scoring low in the first quarter, though the Saints would gain a narrow lead before time ran out.
Coming out hot shooting in the second quarter Carly Drew would score 11 of the V-Hawks next 13 points, folloed by Pearla Teko-Folly scoring back to back jump shots. HCC would go on an eight point run ended on a foul drawn by Hughes, looking to regain the lead the V-Hawks would work to draw another foul with two seconds remaining, Olivia Lambrigtsen making both shots from the line to tie up the game heading into the half.
Free throws would claim four of the first six points for the V-Hawks, before Teko-Folly would draw an and one. Lauryn Goettl stepping on the floor once again would drain two more jump shots before the end of the quarter bringing the score to 55-62.
The V-Hawks needing to battle back from a deficit would be led by Nicole Johnson with assists and moves under the hoop closing the gap, until Macy Stellner would take to the free throw line and follow it up with a jumper to take over the lead.
Teko-Folly led the V-Hawks with 13 points and Hughes had 11 points. Allie Caldwell led the Fighting Saints with 23.
The V-Hawks and the Saints were even shooting from the floor at 43.9%, while the V-Hawks outshot from three 33.3-26.7% and outrebounded 39-36 on the night
The V-Hawks return to action Tuesday, November 26, as they host Governors State.
