V-Hawks Open Season with a Win

CANTON, Mo. – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team secure their first win of the season 68-62 over Culver-Stockton College (MO) on Friday Night opening the 2024-25 season. The V-Hawks sit at 1-0 while the Wildcats fall to 0-1.

Macy Stellner opened the game with a jumper before Olivia Lambrigtsen drew a foul draining both free throws. The V-Hawks would struggle to finish though would keep up on the defensive, Nicole Johnson would find the putback late in the first quarter, followed by Nora Tucker taking a jumper from three closing the gap on the lead. Taylor Jacobson's jump shot with 36 seconds remaining in the quarter would set the V-Hawks down one point 11-12.

Tucker would lead the charge on going up on the Wildcats with back to back 3-pointers. In a battle for the lead Aubrey Dorn and Carley Drew would work to keep the narrow lead heading into the half.

Johnson would score to start the third from three. Off a steal Marley Hughes would find Stellner turning for a layup on a fast break. Following a timeout Lambrigtsen would get the rebound and take to the hoop on a layup, with 1:21 on the clock Tucker would pull up from 3 taking the lead before CSC would tie up the game 47-47 ending the third quarter.

Despite keeping a close game the V-Hawks would remain on the defensive, until Hughes would make a layup drawing a foul, making the free throw. Johnson would claim four points on a jump shot and layup back to back. With one second left on the clock Lambrigtsen would draw a foul making both free throws for the win 68-62.

Lambrigtsen led the V-Hawks with 14 points, Tucker had 12, and Johnson had 11 points. Misora Nambara led the Wildcats with 17.

The teams shot similarly from the floor, 39.0% for the V-Hawks to 41.7% from the Wildcats, though the V-Hawks had the advantage from three with 33.3% - 23.8%. Outrebounding 39-36 and turnovers 18-20.

The V-Hawks return to action on Saturday, November 2, as they take on Missouri Valley in Day 2 of the Culver Classic.
