V-Hawks Defeat Blue Hawks on the Road

DICKINSON, ND – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team defeated Dickinson State University (ND) in an NSAA matchup Saturday night, 78-67. The V-Hawks improve to 10-11 (5-5 NSAA), while the Blue Hawks fall to 7-17 (2-8 NSAA).

Dickinson scored the first seven points of the game before Nicole Johnson got the V-Hawks on the board. That started a run that included four points from Madison Hugdahl to bring the score to 10-11, and despite another Hugdahl basket and a jumper by Marley Hughes, DSU led 21-14 after one.

Megan Miedema hit a three early in the second, followed by buckets from Hugdahl and Hughes. Emma Wagner then hit three straight threes to bring the score to 33-37, though the Blue Hawks scored three quick points to go up 40-33 going into the half.

Viterbo scored six unanswered to start the third, point coming from Emily McCurdy, Lauryn Goettl, and Johnson, and a Hugdahl jump shot gave Viterbo their first lead, 43-42. Nora Tucker and Wagner each hit threes to keep the V-Hawks ahead, and Tucker made both free throws to close out the period, leading 55-52.

Macy Stellner started the fourth with a triple, and McCurdy added four points, though the Blue hawks answered each score. Hugdahl scored on back-to-back possessions to go up double digits, and Hughes hit her clutch free throws late to secure the 78-67 win.

Wagner and Hugdahl each had 14 points to lead the V-Hawks, while Hughes added 12. Johnson posted six rebounds and two steals. Samantha Oase had 22 points for Dickinson.

Viterbo was more efficient from the field, 53.1% - 42.6% and from three, 38.9% - 33.31%. VU also grabbed one more rebound, 28-17, but committed more turnovers, 17-14.

Viterbo returns to action on Wednesday, February 14 at Waldorf University (Iowa).
