V-Hawks Lose Conference Matchup at Home

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team took on the Dickinson State University Blue Hawks at home on Friday. The V-Hawks fell to Dickinson 66-69 bringing their overall record to 5-17 and 2-8 in league play. The Blue Hawks rise to 9-15 overall and 4-6 in the NSAA.

Quarter one started off with both teams scoring tieing at 9-9. Dickinson State earned a small lead with a jumper by Sunshine Vicente, 12-16 at the 3:34 mark. The V-Hawks held on close to the Blue Hawks with Emily McCurdy and Nicole Johnson each landing a shot bringing the score to 19-20 at the 1:51 mark. A layup by Samantha Oase kept Dickinson up to end the first quarter 19-24. Natalia Leguizamon landed a couple free throws for Viterbo to start off quarter two before the Blue Hawks stretched their lead 23-34 with a three-pointer by Mckenzie Johnson. Oase added a jump shot for the Blue Hawks at the 3:25 mark before Emma Wagner landed a three for Viterbo with the V-Hawks trailing 27-38. A McCurdy layup ended the half with Viterbo down 33-41.

Kaitlyn Kennedy and Leguizamon each landed a three for Viterbo to start the third quarter 39-43. Dickinson maintained their lead throughout the quarter before Viterbo narrowed the gap 43-47 with a layup by Gina Stefferud at the 2:53 mark. Each team landed a couple free throws before a Leguizamon layup ended quarter three with Viterbo trailing by two, 47-49. Starting off quarter four, a free throw by McCurdy helped the V-Hawks gain their first lead since quarter one, 50-49. The teams traded leads with Sophie Leinfelder adding a three for the V-Hawks at the 4:10 mark, 58-59. Johnson and Leguizamon each landed a couple free throws forcing a Dickinson timeout with Viterbo leading 62-61 at the 2:20 mark. Lindsay Peterson made a layup to help the Blue Hawks gain back their lead 64-67 with one minute left in the game. V-Hawk Julia Salmen added points on the board bringing the V-Hawks within two points of the Blue Hawks with 18 seconds left. Viterbo was unable to get the ball back and a free throw by Dickinson ended the game 66-69.

The V-Hawks were able to outshoot the Blue Hawks from the free throw line (84%-68%), but were unsuccessful from the field (28.8%-43.4%).

Leguizamon led the V-Hawks with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Leinfelder added 11 points and 3 steals. Stefferud and Johnson each contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds.

Peterson led the Blue Hawks with 16 points followed by Johnson with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Oase added 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The V-Hawks will play their final home regular season game on Saturday taking on the Valley City State University Vikings at 3:00 PM CST.
