Comet's Hot Shooting too much for V-Hawks

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team took on Mayville State University (N.D.) on Saturday afternoon. The V-Hawks fell to the Comets 97-61, bringing their record to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in the NSAA, while the Comets improved to 11-3, and 3-0 in conference.

The Comets started off strong, putting up 17 points before the V-Hawks were able to get on the board. Two free throws made by Kaitlyn Kennedy brought the game to a score of 2-17. Despite points coming from Sophie Leinfelder, Emily Bohn, and Kennedy, the V-Hawks were unable to gain traction. A layup made by Mayville's Sydney Brekken finished the first quarter, leaving Viterbo trailing 8-36. The Comets began the second quarter with 5 points, which were answered by 4 consecutive points for Emily McCurdy. However, Mayville maintained their lead throughout the quarter, leaving Viterbo down 16-59 at the half.

Mayville's Jordan Zrust put in a layup to start off the third quarter. Shortly after, Gina Stefferud scored the first 2 of her 10-point streak. During this time, the Comets put in 12 points of their own, making the score 73-26 in their favor. The teams continued to tease points back and forth for the remainder of the quarter, which ended with the Comets leading 85-43. The fourth quarter was similar to the third, with the teams each putting up points. At the 8:54 mark, Natalia Leguizamon drained a three-pointer, bringing the score to 46-85. A layup made by McCurdy marked the end of the game, in which the Comets topped the V-Hawks 97-61. 

Mayville outshot Viterbo from both the field (58.5%-36.7%) and from the three (48.3%-16.7%). The V-Hawks made all 14 of their free throws.

Stefferud led with 18 points for the V-Hawks, setting a new career-high. Leinfelder, Ellie Hoesley, and McCurdy each recorded 3 assists. Mackenzie Hughes led the Comets in points, recording 22, while CJ Decker posted a game-high 7 assists.

The V-Hawks will travel to Illinois to take on Judson University on Tuesday, January 10 at 5:00 PM CST.
