Viterbo Falls to Haskell in Non-Conference Matchup

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team stayed on the road Saturday to take on Haskell Indian Nations University. The V-Hawks fell to Haskell 78-92 bringing their overall record to 2-8 while Haskell rises to 6-10 on the year. 

The V-Hawks started out strong in quarter one 15-6 with two three-point jumpers from Natalia Leguizamon. Dominique Brown with Haskell landed a three-pointer at the 3:08 mark to close the gap 17-14. Viterbo's Julia Salmon put up a layup to end quarter one 24-16. Quarter two started off with a three-point jumper by V-Hawk Emma Wagner. The teams traded points with Viterbo maintaining their lead. A layup by Leguizamon at the 5:10 mark brought the score to 35-27. Mahpiya Irving with Haskell landed two free throws tieing the game 38-38 with two minutes left in the half. The teamps traded points and a three-point jumper by Irving put Haskell up 42-46 at the half.

Irving put up a layup to start quarter three for Haskell, 44-50 at the 9:26 mark. Almost three minutes went by before the next points were scored at the 5:22 mark. The teams traded points and Haskell kept their lead with a layup by Irving, 48-57. Each team put up a layup to end quarter three 55-68. Sophie Leinfelder added the first pair for the V-Hawks in quarter four, 57-70. Wagner landed a free throw to get Viterbo within ten points of Haskell bringing the score to 66-77. V-Hawk Tyreesha Blaylock landed a couple free throws at the 3:23 mark added to the score, 70-78. Haskell's Justine Butterfield contributed two free throws to finish the game 78-92 over Viterbo.

Haskell outshot Viterbo from the field (36.9%-50.7%) and from the three (29.4%-40%). The V-Hawks came out on top with free throws (87%-77.8%).

Natalia Leguizamon and Kaitlyn Kennedy each produced 16 points for the V-Hawks. Kennedy also added 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Emma Wagner recorded 15 points on the night. Tyreesha Blaylock led the V-Hawks with 8 rebounds.

Mahpiya Irving led Haskell with 29 points and 6 assists. Marilyn Goodman added 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Grace Tahahwah contributed 4 steals and 6 rebounds.

The V-Hawks will travel to Hawaii to compete in the Malika Classic on Sunday, December 18 taking on Morningside at 4:00 PM CST followed by Arizona Christian on December 19 at 5:00 PM CST.
