V-Hawks Fall to Waldorf in Conference Opener

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team took on Waldorf University (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon. The V-Hawks fell to the Warriors 67-72, bringing their record to 2-6 overall. 

Kaitlyn Kennedy started off scoring for the game by landing a pair of free throws. The V-Hawks maintained their lead throughout the first quarter, ending with an Emma Wagner three-point jumper, putting the V-Hawks up 16-12. Two Warrior layups would tie the score 16-16 to start the second quarter. The teams traded points for the remainder of the quarter. A final layup made by Waldorf's Edosa Ogbemudia would result in the V-Hawks trailing 26-28 at the half. 

The Warriors maintained their lead to start off the third quarter. Following a Viterbo timeout, a layup made by Tyreesha Blaylock would bring the score to 28-38. This would kick off a scoring streak for the V-hawks, in which Kennedy, Ellie Hoesley, Julia Salmen, and Megan Meidema each contributed points. Waldorf put up four points in the last few minutes of the quarter, leaving Viterbo trailing 34-44. In the fourth quarter, the teams traded both points and fouls. Seven consecutive points for the Warriors left the V-Hawks trailing by 16. A made layup by Kennedy put Viterbo back on the board. A Salmen three-pointer brought the score gap to 5, but the Warriors maintained their lead. The game ended with a score of 67-72.  

The V-Hawks ended the game with a free throw percentage of 73.9% to the Warriors' 66.7%, but the Warriors won the battle on both rebounds and three-pointers. 

Kennedy led the V-Hawks in points, scoring 18. Wagner contributed 11 points, and Nicole Johnson 9 rebounds.  

Lizzie Gara led in points for the Warriors, contributing 20. Taylor Moen contributed 16, and Sandra Christan scored 15.  

The V-Hawks will hit the road to play Doane University on Friday, December 9 at 6:00 PM CST.
