Warriors Top V-Hawks in Exhibition

WINONA, Minn. – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team fell to NCAA Division II Winona State University (Minn.) in an exhibition game on Monday. The Warriors will improve to 4-0 on the season.

The game began with a Tyreesha Blaylock steal leading to a Natalia Leguizamon layup, followed by three scoreless minutes by both teams that included another Blaylock steal and a Kaitlyn Kennedy block. Mattie Schimenz ended the drought with a three, which sparked a 13-0 run for the Warriors. Kennedy broke the run with a three of her own at 3:28, and after a pair of Kennedy free throws, Winona State would lead 23-7 at the end of the first quarter. Leguizamon scored the first two baskets in the second period for the V-Hawks, and Emily McCurdy added a layup at the 5:20 mark. Julia Salmen's jumper gave Viterbo 18 points, going into halftime trailing by 19.

Blaylock set up a Leguizamon three, then hit a jump shot of her own at the 6:49 mark to bring the score to 27-40. Leinfelder found McCurdy for a layup, and the third quarter ended woth Viterbo trailing 29-43. In the fourth, Leinfelder's steal led to a pair of Leguizamon free throws, then Leguizamon nailed a three at the 6:27 mark. Madison Hugdahl's layup at 2:56 brought the score to 42-69, and Macy Stellner and Jada Kowalczyk each made layups to end the game 46-75.

WSU outshot Viterbo 46%-28%, including 37.5%-13% from three. The Warriors also won the rebound battle 40-27 and had 12 more points in the paint.

Leguizamon led the V-Hawks with 19 points, eight rebounds, and two steals, Blaylock had three steals, two points, and an assists, and Leinfelder had four points with two assists.

Schimenz led Winona State with 11 points, and Alex Dornfeld had six points and 13 boards,

The V-Hawks return to action on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 as they host NCAA Division III Martin Luther College (Minn.) at 6 PM.
