Viterbo falls to Iowa Wesleyan on day two of V-Hawk Classic

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team hosted the Gunderson Hotel and Suites V-Hawk Classic on Saturday. The V-Hawks fell 63-74 to Iowa Wesleyan and drop to 1-4 on the season while the Tigers improve to 3-3.

Tyreesha Blaylock and Emma Wagner each made a 3-point shot to start the first quarter up 8-4. The teams traded leads and a layup by the Tigers would put them up 16-15 with three minutes left in the quarter. A steal and layup by V-Hawk Natalia Leguizamon put Viterbo up 17-16 to end the first quarter. The teams continued to trade points to start quarter two with Wager putting up a three and giving the V-Hawks the lead 21-19. A layup by Iowa Wesleyan's Megan Teal tied the game up 21-21 but the V-Hawks quickly regained their lead with three pointers by Leguizamon and Kaitlyn Kennedy going into the half 33-29.

Leguizamon led the V-Hawks in the first half with 8 points and 4 rebounds. Megan Teal led the Tigers with 14 points.

The V-Hawks maintained their lead to start the third quarter with Blaylock and Leguizamon each putting up a three, 39-31. A couple layups by Tiger's Breanna Wendland helped Iowa Wesleyan get back in the game with only a point behind the V-Hawks 39-38. The Tigers got their first lead of the quarter 41-42 with free throws by Isabell West at the 3:00 minute mark. Iowa Wesleyan stretched their lead with a Wendland jump shot ending quarter three 43-47. The teams traded points to start quarter four with a three pointer by Wagner, 48-50. A layup and free throw by Kennedy helped the V-Hawks tie the game 58-58 with five minutes left in the game. A Wendland jumper helped the Tigers regain their lead and end the game 63-74.

Viterbo outshot Iowa Wesleyan from the three 43.5%-33.3%, but the Tigers won the rebound battle on both defense and offense with 32 and 12 compared to the V-Hawks 16 and 6.

Leguizamon led the V-Hawks with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Kennedy added 15 points for Viterbo. Sophie Leinfelder recorded 4 assists.

Wendland led Iowa Wesleyan with 23 points. West added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers. Both Wendland and West added 4 assists on the night.

The V-Hawks will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to take on Mount Mercy on Saturday, November 19 at 2:00 PM CST.
