V-Hawks defeat Mayville in first meeting since NSAA Championship

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team (2-2) defeated the Mayville State University Comets, 72-60, at home on Saturday. The last time these two teams played was in the 2020 North Star Championship, where Mayville State won in the final seconds.

After a close first half, Viterbo went into the locker room down by only three. The V-Hawks scored a quick six points at the start of the second half to tie the game up at 40. After a lot of back-and-forths, the V-Hawk women were able to outscore the Comets 18-8 in the 4th quarter to secure the win.

The defense for Viterbo played well when it mattered most, tallying 13 steals and 23 points off turnovers throughout the game. The offense was well balanced, with four V-Hawks scoring in double digits.

Kacie Gross (Jr. – Helena, Mont.) led the way for the V-Hawks with 16 points, converting 8 of her 11 free throws. Kaitlyn Kennedy (So. – Holmen, Wis.) finished with 15 points, followed by Madison Lindauer (So. – Tomah, Wis.) with 13 points and Sophie Leinfelder (So. – La Crosse, Wis.) with 11. Allie Wojtysiak (So. – Cloquet, Minn.) had nine rebounds.
