LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Softball team fell in their home opening series with Mount Mercy University on Thursday afternoon. The V-Hawks sink to 2-14 (CCAC 1-1) while the Mustangs rise to 11-15.
Viterbo 2, Mount Mercy 7
The V-Hawks took an early lead with a run in the first innings, though the Mustangs would take the lead in the sixth before sealing in the seventh with three runs.
Madyson Schultz started on the mound for the V-Hawks pitching six innings, striking out four batters, allowing three runs over eight hits for the loss. In relief Ava Keicher would take to the mound striking out a batter letting up four hits and four runs.
At the plate Marissa Carter-Olson would bomb a homer for the V-Hawks while Alexis Watson would grab an RBI with a sac fly.
Viterbo 3, Mount Mercy 18
Scoring two runs in the first, the V-Hawks would hold the lead until the fourth inning when the Mustangs would go up a single run. The sixth inning out take out the V-Hawks with numerous runs and a final run by the V-hawks would end the game.
On the mound Alexis Watson would take the loss pitching four innings, striking out two batters and allowing four hits and three runs. In relief to end the game Mia Weithaus would pitch a single inning allowing three hits and runs, walking only one batter.
Chelsie Paulsen would collect an RBI off a double in the bottom of the sixth and Megan Jardine would grab an RBI off a single in the first.
The V-Hawks are back in action Friday, March 28 to host Olivet Nazarene in their home conference opener.
