DAVENPORT, Iowa – The Viterbo University Softball team lost in their second day at the St. Ambrose Dome Tournament to Cornerstone University 11-3, and to Clarke University 14-4. The V-Hawks falling to 1-3 on the season.
After Cornerstone took a 1-0 lead in the first, Viterbo responded in the second inning with a three-run rally. Alexis Watson started the scoring with an RBI double, bringing in Megan Jardine. Makayla Nortman followed with a two-run single to center, plating Watson and Grace Elton to give the V-Hawks a 3-1 advantage.
However, Cornerstone answered immediately with three runs in the bottom of the second, reclaiming a 4-3 lead. They tacked on another run in the fifth before breaking the game open in the sixth with six more runs, capitalizing on errors and timely hitting.
Nortman led the V-Hawks offensive effort with a key two-run single in the second. Watson taking on the loss.
In game two of the day Clarke wasted no time, putting up eight runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from L. Hefel and a two-RBI single by K. Holtam. Viterbo responded in the second when Watson drove in a run with a single to center. The V-Hawks then rallied in the third, scoring three runs on RBI singles from Alina Garstka and Makella Jacobs to trim the deficit to 10-4.
However, Clarke extended its lead with four more runs in the fourth, including another two-run double by K. Kasput. Viterbo was unable to rally, and the game ended via run rule after five innings.
Jacobs led the V-Hawks in game two with a key two-run single in the third, though Julie Woodman would record the loss.
The V-Hawks are back in action March 9, to kick off Spring Training in Tucson, Arizona.
