DAVENPORT, Iowa – The Viterbo University Softball team began their season one and one on Saturday afternoon, first winning against Clarke University 3-2, then falling to College of Saint Mary (Neb) 10-1. The V-Hawks sit at 1-1.
The V-Hawks took an early lead in the fourth inning when Megan Jardine drove in Makayla Nortman with an RBI single. Clarke responded in the sixth, tying the game on a fielder's choice RBI by M. Durr. The game remained deadlocked until the eighth when K. Harris put Clarke ahead with an RBI double.
Viterbo answered immediately in the bottom of the eighth. Alyssa Roos' bunt single brought home Alina Garstka to tie the game at 2-2. Moments later, Jardine delivered again with a game-winning RBI single to left field, scoring Roos for the 3-2 walk-off victory.
Ava Keicher taking the first win of the season.
In game two of the day the Flames exploded for seven runs in the first inning, capitalizing on a fielding error and key hits from A. Kosmicki and M. Hays. They added two more runs in the second on a two-RBI double from H. Anderson and tacked on their final run in the third with a solo home run by E. Watts.
Viterbo's lone run came in the fourth when Grace Elton grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Jardine to score. However, the early deficit was too much to overcome.
The V-Hawks are back in action tomorrow for day two of the St Ambrose Dome tournament.
