V-Hawks Season Ends in Loss to Mayville State

DICKINSON, ND. – The Viterbo University Softball team, seeded No. 7 in the NSAA tournament, saw their 2024 season come to an end on Saturday night following a 6-1 loss to No4 Mayville State University. The V-Hawks end the season at 9-40 (5-19 NSAA), while the Comets improve to 16-30.

Makayla Nortman and Sydney Haakenson started the game with back-to-back singles, but Mayville would be the first on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Haleigh Zanoni doubled in the top of the second, which brought home Amanda Bogdonovich, but the MSU took back the advantage with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame. They added another run in the third with am RBI double in the third, and despite hits from Alexis Watson and Bogdonovich, Mayville ballooned the lead to 6-1 in the sixth following back-to-back RBI doubles and an RBI single.

Bogdonovich had two hits for the V-Hawks, while Nortman, Haakenson, Zanoni and Watson each had one. Alyssa Avila had three hits for Mayville. Delaney Ryan (L, 0-1) recorded the loss, while Courtney Boll (W, 7-13) earned the win with nine strikeouts.

On the year, Morgan James recorded the third best single season batting average in school history (.416), and secured the second best career batting average of .393. She also recorded the second most RBIs (113), and homeruns (25).

Megan Jardine tied the single season record of triples with four, while also recording the third most amount of hits (53) and the fourth most at bats (168).

Courtney Denton set a new record for times walked in a season at 27, and moved into the fifth spot in the career list with 45.

Amanda Bogdonovich and Alexis Watson tied for the fourth most single season pitching appearances with 33 apiece, and Makayla Nortman moves into third in career stolen bases with 42.
