JAMESTOWN, ND. – The Viterbo University Softball team suffered a pair of losses to Valley City State University (ND) on Friday evening, 1-5 and 2-9. The V-Hawks fall to 6-23 (3-9 NSAA), while the Vikings improve to 16-15 (8-3 NSAA).
Valley City would get on the board first with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, and after two hits from the V-Hawks in the top of the fourth, the Vikings extended their lead with three runs scored on five hits in the bottom of the frame. The V-Hawks scored in the fifth as Alina Gartska's single brought in Amanda Bogdonovich, but VCSU answered with a solo home run. The V-Hawks left three runner on base in the sixth, and could not muster another run.
Six different V-Hawks recorded a single run, while Logan Gronberg was 3-for-3 for Valley City. Emily Roberts (L, 0-4) recorded the win, Joelle Lamontagne (W, 5-4) struck out five batters, and Gronberg recorded the save.
The Vikings used a big first inning to take command of the second game, scoring four runs n three hits and an error. Viterbo answered with two runs in the second, as Makella Jacobs' double scored Natalie Martin, and Makayla Nortman brought home Jacobs. A sacrifice fly in the third added to VCSU's lead, 5-2, and after two hitless innings, the Vikings scored another four in the sixth off four more hits. Megan Jardine and Marissa Carter-Olson each had hits in the seventh, but neither reached home.
Jardine was 2-of-3 for the V-Hawks , and Sierra Crocker had two hits and scored two runs for the Vikings. Emily Roberts (L, 0-5) recorded the loss, and Maddy Zander (W, 9-6) struck out six batters in the complete game win.
The V-Hawks return to action on Wednesday, April 3 as they host Martin Luther College (Minn.), starting at 2 PM.
