Vikings Take a Pair of Games from the V-Hawks

JAMESTOWN, ND. – The Viterbo University Softball team fell to Valley City State in a pair of NSAA Conference games on Thursday night, 5-6 and 1-4. The V-Hawks fall to 6-21 (3-7 NSAA), while the Vikings improve to 14-15 (6-3 NSAA).

The V-Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first off a Syndey Haakenson RBI triple, followed by a Marissa Carter-Olson RBI double. Carter-Olson extended that lead in the second, bringing home Alina Gartska and Courtney Denton on a left field single. However, the Vikings took control of the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth, scored on five hits. VU had a hit in each of the next two innings, but did not score again until the top of the seventh as Morgan James batted in Haakenson. However, it was not enough, and Viterbo fell, 6-5.

Carter-Olson led the V-Hawks with two hits and three RBIs, and Haakenson added two hits and scored two runs. Sierra Crocker had two hits and an RBI for the Vikings. Emily Roberts (L, 0-3) struck out three batters, Joelle Lamontagne (W, 4-4) recorded five Ks, and Logan Gronberg earned her first save.

Following two scoreless innings to start the second game, Megan Jardine would triple in the top of the third to bring in Gartska to take the 1-0 lead. However, VCSU matched the run in the bottom of the frame, then took the lead in the following inning on a sacrifice fly. The V-Hawks produced three baserunners in the top of the fifth, but none reached home, and the Vikings homered in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs. Amanda Bogdonovich singled in the sixth, but that would be the final baserunner for Viterbo in the game.

Four V-Hawks recorded a single hit, while Kennadi Stone was 3-of-3 for VCSU. Alexis Watson (L, 4-9) recorded the loss, Maddy Zander (W, 8-6) earned the win, and Gronberg posted another save.

The V-Hawks and Vikings continue their series of Friday, March 29.
