Comets and V-Hawk Split Series

JAMESTOWN, ND – The Viterbo University Softball team split games to complete their series with Mayville State (ND) on Saturday, winning 6-3 and losing 7-5. The V-Hawks now sit at 6-19 (3-5 NSAA) on the year, while the Comets are 8-17 (3-3 NSAA).

The Comets used three hits in the top of the opening inning to score a run, but Viterbo took the lead back in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles from Sydney Haakenson and Margan James. Makayla Nortman then brought in Courtney Denton in the bottom of the second. Although the Comets tied the game in the top of the third, Viterbo kept the bats going with back-to-back-to-back RBIs from Amanda Bogdonovich, Kate Olsen, and Denton. From there, the defenses stepped up as each team managed base runners, but could not score, and Alexis Watson struck out three batter in the seventh to end the game.

James led the V-Hawks, going 3-of-4 with an RBI, while Haakenson batted .500 and scored two runs. Lindsey Tulla had three hits for the Comets. Watson earned the win with 9 strikeouts in 4.1 IP, and Courtney Boll recorded the loss.

The Comets jumped out to a big lead in the second, scoring three runs in both the first and second innings. However the V-Hawks had a huge third inning to close the deficit, as James recorded a two-RBI double, followed by RBIs from Bogdonovich, Haleigh Zanoni and Denton. Mayville added an insurance run in the fourth inning. James and Megan Jardine each had hits over the final innings, but were unable to find home as MSU held on to the 7-5 win.

James led the V-Hawks with a pair of hits and RBIs, while three Comets had multiple hits. Makayla Nortman recorded the loss, and Emily Haines the complete game win.

The V-Hawks return to action on Thursday, March 28 at Valley City State (ND).
