V-Hawks Complete Comeback Against Comets

JAMESTOWN, ND. – The Viterbo University Softball team split a pair of games with Mayville State University (ND) on Friday at the University of Jamestown Nelson Family Dome, 4-8 and 8-7. The V-Hawks now sit at 5-18 (2-4 NSAA) on the year, while the Comets are now 8-17 (3-3 NSAA).

MSU would take the lead in the first game in the top of first wit an RBI double, then added two runs in the second, and one more in the third.  Sydney Haakenson doubled in the bottom of the third, which brought home Makayla Nortman Courtney Denton to get the V-Hawks on the board. After two hit-less innings, Marissa Carter-Olson brought home Haakenson, and Amanda Bogdonovich brought in Makella Jacobs to tie the game, but Mayville used a big seventh inning to take the 8-4 lead and win.

Haakenson led the V-Hawks with two hits and two RBIs, while Megan Elliott was 3-of-4 for the Comets. Alexis Waston struck out three batters, while Emily Haines earned the complete game win.

Morgan James' RBI single brought home Haakenson to give Viterbo the first lead of the second game, and Megan Jardine extended that to 2-0 with an RBI double in the second. Mayville scored seven runs in the third inning on eight hits, but VU began to chip away at the lead with two RBIs from Denton. Three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, coming from a James two-RBI single and Bogdonovich RBI double evened the score at 7-7. Jardine put Viterbo ahead for good in the fifth with an RBI single, and the Comets did not manage another base runner.

Jardine was 4-of-4 to lead Viterbo, while James added three hits. Elliott had three hits for Mayville. Bogdonovich earned the win with two strikeouts, and Courtney Boll recorded the loss.

The teams finish the series on Saturday, March 23 at 8 am.
