V-Hawks Advance in Conference Tournament

DICKINSON, ND - The Viterbo University Softball team earned the win 6-3 vs. #6 Waldorf University at the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The win allowed the V-Hawks to move on to battle #3 Dickinson State University. 

Viterbo would take the lead in the bottom of the first with Makayla Nortman scoring on an error by the Warriors followed with an RBI by Marissa Carter leading 2-0 going into the second. Waldorf answered back tieing the game 2-2 with Emily Muro scoring on an error and Gabby Bierly scoring on a grounder to short stop. The V-Hawks were able to retire Waldorf's first three batters in the top of the third and headed into the fourth inning tied 2-2. A double by Courtney Denton allowed Brittney Slocum to score and reclaim their lead. Denton managed to score on a wild pitch going into the fifth inning 4-2. Viterbo retired Waldorf's first three batters before Channing Manske scored on a grounder to second base stretching their lead 5-2. A sacrifice fly to center field by Sydney Haakenson put another point on the board for the V-Hawks heading into the seventh inning 6-2. A double to center field allowed Waldorf to add a point on the board before Viterbo was able to claim the victory 6-3.

Nortman went 1 for 2 at the plate including 2 stolen bases. Denton went 2 for 3 at the plate including 1 RBI. Morgan Fuhrer recorded the win pitching all 7 innings allowing 3 hits and striking out 8 batters. Alex Mathers recorded the loss pitching 4 innings allowing 7 hits and striking out 0 batters.
