V-Hawks Finish Non-Conference Schedule with Doubleheader Win

ONALASKA, Wis. – The Viterbo University Softball team finished their non-conference schedule with a pair of win over Iowa Wesleyan University in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The V-Hawks took game one 6-4 and game two 10-4 to improve to 14-25 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 13-24.

Haleigh Zanoni would get the V-Hawks on the board first, with a single in the bottom of the second that scored Morgan James. Amanda Bogdonovich followed that up with an inside the park homerun down the right field line to put Viterbo up 3-0. Channing Manske stole home during a double steal with Brittany Slocum, and Megan Jardine's sacrifice fly brought Slocum home for the 5-0 lead. Iowa Wesleyan scored their first run in the top of the fifth, on an unearned RBI by Aspyn Harrison, but Zanoni responded with an RBI of her own to score Addie Schroeder. IWU then added three more runs in the top of the sixth on four hits and a V-Hawk error, but the rally would end there and Viterbo claimed the 6-4 win.

Bogdonovich led the V-Hawks offense with two RBIs on 2-of-3 hitting, while Manske scored on run on with two hits on two at-bats. Kylie Topliff went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Tigers. Maddie Wilkey (W, 6-10) earned the complete game win, while Aspyn Harrison recorded the loss.

Slocum's single in the opening frame of the second game scored Sydney Haakenson, but the Tigers took their first lead of the day with a two RBI single in the top of the third. They would add to the lead with a solo homerun in the top of the fifth before VU scored five runs in the bottom of the inning. Morgan James earned an RBI walk, and Slocum would single through the lest side for two RBIs. Jardine sacrifice fly brought in Manske, and Zanoni's double brought the score to 6-3. IWU added one more in the top of the sixth, but the momentum was all in favor of the V-Hawks, as Slocum recorded two more RBIs, Marissa Carter-Olson recorded an RBI single, and Zanoni drove in Grace Brewer with another single. Three straight outs in the seventh ended the game with a Viterbo victory.

Haakenson went a perfect 4-for-4 and scored three runs, while Zanoni had two RBIs on three hits. Julia Hill had an RBI on two hits. Payton Lamont (W, 2-5) had two strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched, while Ariana Wolfard recorded the loss.

The V-Hawks return to action with a home series against Presentation College (SD) starting on Saturday, April 29 to finish their regular season.
