Comets Get Revenge on V-Hawks

CASSELTON, ND – The Viterbo University Softball team dropped a pair of North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) games to Mayville State University (ND) on Monday morning. The V-Hawks drop to 12-25 (8-15 NSAA) while the Comets improve to 6-24 (5-17 NSAA).

Viterbo would take the lead early in the first game of the day, going up 4-0 in the top of the thir as Sydney Haakenson's single scored Amanda Bogdonovic, Makayla Nortman reached home on Channing Manske's RBI, Haakenson would score as Manske stole second, and Manske scored on Morgan James RBI. Mayville responded with a single run of their own in the bottom of the frame, and added two more on a two RBI-single in the next inning. Marissa Carter-Olson and Bogdonovic each rocked solo homeruns in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 6-3, but a huge inning for the Comets saw six hits and three VU errors en route to scoring six runs. James' single would bring in Manske in the top of the seventh, but the rally ended there and the V-Hawks lost 7-9.

Nortman went 2-for-4, and James had two RBI's with a single hit. Sidney Fairbank had three RBIs for the Comets. Ella Driebel (0-8) recorded the loss, while Fairbanks (W, 3-13) earned the win, while Courtney Boll earned the save.

Mayville would score two runs in the opening frame of the second game on four hits, but James hit a homer in the second to get the V-Hawks on the board. Mackenzie Hughes would hit two home runs over the next two innings to put MSU up 1-4. It would be all defense from there, as neither team would produce another run.

James, Carter-Olson, and Brittany Slocum each had a hit for Viterbo, while Hughes went 3-for-4 for Mayville. Driebel (0-9) recorded the loss against, while Boll earned the complete game win.

The V-Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 25 as they host Iowa Wesleyan University.
