Fuhrer Remains Undefeated on the Mound, Wilkey Collects a Win at Mayville

CASSELTON, ND – The Viterbo University Softball team earned a pair of North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) victories on Sunday afternoon as they defeated Mayville State University (ND), 8-4 and 7-3. The V-Hawks improve to 12-23 (8-13 NSAA) while the Comets fall to 4-24 (3-17 NSAA).

The V-Hawks started the game up 1-0 in the top of the first, as Sydney Haakenson reached home with the help of a Mayville error. The Comets would answer in the bottom of the frame with a double, a triple, and a homerun to score four runs. The V-Hawks slowly chipped away at the lead, scoring a single run in each of the next three innings, including a Morgan James homerun, a Haakenson homerun, and a Makayla Nortman RBI single. Viterbo then took the lead in the top of the fifth with a James two-RBI single, and a Megan Jardine RBI single to center field. They added a final insurance run in the top of the sixth on a Brittany Slocum RBI to help secure the 8-4 win.

Haakenson led the V-Hawks offense by going 3-for4, scoring three runs, and batting in one, while James added three RBIs on 2-of-4 batting. Brooke Roeges went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Mayville. Maddie Wilkey (5-10) earned the complete game win, while Courtney Boll recorded the loss.

Viterbo would get on the board first in the second game as well, with a Courtney Denton RBI single in the top of the second. Amanda Bogdonovic added to the lead in the top of the fourth as Amanda Bogdonovic's two-RBI single brought home Jardine and Marissa Carter-Olson. The Comets tied the game in the bottom of that inning with an RBI double and two-RBI homerun. Viterbo put up three more runs of their own in the top of the fifth as Slocum's double scored Changing Manske and Haakenson, and Jardine's single brought home Slocum. Jardine added one more RBI in the top of the seventh, with a double to bring in Grace Brewer and solidify the 7-3 win.

Jardine went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Slocum andded two RBIs of her own. Roeges had two RBIs on a single hit as well. Morgan Fuhrer (6-0) had five strikeouts in her complete game win, while Sidney Fairbanks recorded the loss.

The series continues on Monday, April 24 with the first game starting at 10 AM.
